Information about AZERBAIJAN
Azerbaijan is in a strategic location between East and West, and was once a major stopover on the Great Silk Route. It was subsequently the subject of many empirical battles, the last of which was by the former USSR. However, all of these battles have left their mark, some more pleasing than others. Azerbaijani architecture went through many different stages over the centuries, but the lasting legacies belong to the medieval period, especially the Maiden Tower, the palace of the Shirvan shahs in Baku, and at the Apsheron Peninsula there are several fine medieval castles. One of the country"s most pleasant surprises is the capital"s ornately decorated subway stations which are its most recent architectural marvels. Despite not being a big country, in Azerbaijan you will find an incredible 9 out of the world"s 11 climatic zones, which lends itself to a variety of activities, including hiking, and thermal spas. A popular pastime in Azerbaijan as is meeting friends in the chaykhanas (tea houses). Azerbaijan"s number one export is oil and there are already many agreements in place with foreign firms for long-term oilfield development, and in anticipation of an oil bonanza the capital Baku is fast becoming a boomtown.
