Information about AZERBAIJAN Azerbaijan is in a strategic location between East and West was once a major stopover on the Great Silk Route and was subsequently the subject of many empirical battles. The last of these takeovers was by the USSR, however all of them have left their mark, some more pleasing than others. Azerbaijani architecture went through many different stages over the centuries but the lasting legacies belong to the medieval period, especially the Maiden Tower and the palace of the Shirvan shahs in Baku and at the Apsheron Peninsula there are several fine medieval castles. One of the country’s most pleasant surprises is the capital's ornately decorated subway stations which are its most recent architectural marvels Despite not being a big country, in Azerbaijan you will find an incredible 9 out of the worlds 11 climatic zones, which lends itself to a variety of activities. You can get in some fine hiking in the parks around Baku and on the Apsheron Peninsula. Taking the waters - soaking in medicinal mud, oil and hotsprings - is a popular pastime in Azerbaijan as is meeting friends in the chaykhanas (tea houses). Azerbaijan's number one export is oil and there are already many agreements in place with foreign firms for long-term oilfield development, and in anticipation of an oil bonanza the capital Baku is fast becoming a boomtown.
